Professor Coovadia serves as chairperson of the KZN Children’s Hospital Trust and also supports the Museum & Heritage Committee of the Trust. He is an internationally renowned and leading South African academic and researcher in maternal and child health and has led ground-breaking work in mother-to-child transmission of HIV. He currently leads a programme of research on maternal, newborn and child health, integration of health delivery services, and contributes to national and global policies on the delivery of effective child health services. He holds the positions of Emeritus Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health and Emeritus Victor Daitz Professor of HIV/AIDS Research at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He is particularly committed to developing research capacity, having supervised over 40 postgraduate students and taught in the medical, nursing and allied health professions for more than 20 years. He was awarded the Star of South Africa by President Nelson Mandela for his contribution to democracy in South Africa.
